I was able to get outdoors a couple of times now to work on getting garden spots ready for planting. The first time I was able to get some squash hills built. They are east of the shed near the fence. I hope to plant yellow summer squash, acorn squash and cucumbers on them.
Yesterday(April 27) I was able to get out for the second time. I dug up the bed on the east side of the shed. This bed was made late last year by David and Nick, so it was not used. I turned the earth then raked it out some what level. I raked it toward the south end, I had extra soil so I went ahead and dug up the corner of the bed. I had to move the rocks that help disperse the rain from the gutter that comes of the shed roof. I raked out the soil and then replaced the rocks. It was a little low in the corner any way so that helped level it out too.
My plans for this bed are to plant giant sunflowers closest to the shed wall. I am going to plant the peppers in front of them. I think I will put some gladiolus in the corner to keep the irises company.
David bought a bunch of bulbs, twenty-seven bags with six bulbs each in four different mixtures, at Dollar General last fall at 90% off. He also got some boxed seeds, two boxes of impatiens, 2 boxes of marigolds, and a box of wildflower mix. I also saved last year’s bulbs with the help of my Garden Book.
2017 Gladiolus Bulbs
I am not going out today(April 28) as the wind is blowing straight at about 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. I don’t need a dirt shower. Maybe tomorrow I can start planting the sunflowers and some gladiolus around the irises. If I have enough energy I might even start digging and raking the beds around the shed, continuing on to the ones around the deck.
The indoor gardening is going slow. I tried starting some Big Bertha peppers from seeds of last years peppers. They did not sprout. I think I kept immature seeds. So last Saturday (April 21) I started some green bell pepper seeds and the squashes and cucumbers. No sprouting yet, but they all take 10 to 14 days to germinate. I hope they all sprout so that by mid to late May I can put them outside.
*Note: I am typing these up in word pad at home. I am not sure when I will next get access to internet to post them. I am putting some dates in parentheses to show what day I am actually talking about.
