But Old Man Winter Just Keeps on Keeping on!
I have been wanting to get out and do some yardening, but mother nature is not being very cooperative this year. We have had several small spring snow storms and the temperatures have been up and down like a yo-yo. The snow is usually gone in a day. The temperatures go back up to the 50s or 60s in the day and the mid 20s to 30s at night. Then a couple of days later temps are down again and more snow. So needless to say I have not even been able to get my flower beds ready. I could try to do some digging on the nicer in between days but the ground is too wet from melting snow dripping. I need a good week of 60s during the day and maybe some low 40s for overnight temps maybe then the ground won’t be a soggy boggy mess.
Last year at this time.
David said he is not even going to try to garden this year. He doesn’t want to battle the gophers or the deer. The deer left the garden pretty much alone most years, but last year they came in and ate David’s tomatoes. He was really pissed about it too. He said the only type of yard work he will be doing is mowing.
When David told me that, I decided I would try to grow a few veggies as well as my flowers. I think I will plant the veggies in the beds around the shed and the space to the east of the shed where we had a few squash plants last year. I want it all to be in the front yard so it will be easier for me to take care of.
David also told me we will probably not do any fishing until about August. He is planning on spending most of the summer doing his gold refining. This was also another reason for not gardening but mostly I think it was the deer. 🙂
Today I was able to get out and do some digging. I started on the east side of the shed next to the fence. I first raked out the pine litter I had been dumping there all winter. I then dug the area up. I built up three nice hills, pushed a coffee can in the top of each one, and then raked the pine litter back around the bases of each hill. This took me an hour to do. I was a hurting unit by then. I decided that was enough for one day. I don’t want to over do it just work myself up to longer and longer periods of yardening.
I was glad I was able to get out and get that much done. It seems that I will not have another chance for a few days again. The weather men are saying that we are to expect another spring mini blizzard Friday and Saturday. Snow, yes snow totals could get as deep as 10 to 15 inches. The wind could gust 35 to 50 mph. The temps will dip into the lower 20s for lows and 30s for highs by Saturday. I guess I will have to spend one or both of those days starting more seeds inside. I guess I can hope that we have a long summer and a few Indian summers thrown in to get use into December. 😀
